Look at those loud signs standing silently in the air High above the crowds shifting in the rain Finding their destinations with results so different Making the connection to activate the sparks Feeling restless can be somewhat dangerous You grate the time away like machinery locked in rust The repetition can make one possibly deranged It’s a dilemma that never seems to age Can you feel it sometimes? The calm when taking off the edge Coming back to life And looking where to stick the wedge Can you feel it sometimes when you’re awake? Having a place to stand, it seems so obvious Keep the movement forward until it goes to bust You’re made to feel at home It all seems the right tone So why don’t you feel fine? There’s no way to contain it. It’s just what it is. Passing to it a push to see what gives. Can you feel it sometimes? The calm when taking off the edge Coming back to life And looking where to stick the wedge

Right from the start she was left to her own devices all the time Forging something in her head, a distracting pantomime Heartbreak and disquietude a grey fog around her head Cracking up hysterically when it all bleeds in vibrant red But it’s no laughing matter… It’s no laughing matter And if only you knew Random faces and alien places can make a house not home Sudden bursts of violence that make it hard to roam Closing doors end up exposing cracks in the veneer There are times she finds it amusing as that’s all she can do But it’s no laughing matter… It’s no laughing matter And if only you knew That that’s just the half of it
3.
Spent from another shift, you’ve got the lights down low Spoken not a word for days, but only at the corner store Then an electronic sound breaks through your hall Your cold hands on the receiver of Flat 21 Through the wires call “can we come up and play again?” The mood breaks and you say “Just let me me buzz you in.” Wonder where this could go? Hoping that time goes far more slow. Cocktail glasses clink and the turntable snarls The conversations grow on a couch so small Everyone tells their stories of love and war The hours roll by and you’re wanting more And it’s 6am — the night starts to change to grey She looks outside “Looks like it’s gonna rain again.” While two sleep on the floor, In the quiet you find your answers for… Blurring into Sunday there’s a calm inside your head Soon the world will to start to come awake And echo with dread You look outside Looks like it’s gonna rain again

He was a bright burning star back in the day They were sure he’d go so very far Some moment left more than just a scar in his head It’s these times where he don’t feel fine There’s something he had read: You never know where it’s going to go next But you got to put it all to the test You never know where it’s going to go next Pull to focus and do what’s best The outer shell keeps melting away, you feel so tired Fate’s got a bone to pick with you, and you don’t know why Could it be wrong time, wrong place, or so it would appear Some sort of relevation is what it takes sometimes. She was the top of the class and it was good An intelligence that could topple anyone But there’s those voices that had other views The ones who know how to pose and their strange attitudes You never know where it’s going to go next But you got to put it all to the test You never know where it’s going to go next Pull to focus and do what’s best Don’t want to be carried away So let’s not get too carried away When it all starts bursting into flames, yes, you’re on fire Fate’s got a bone to pick with you, or so that’s what’s said Any time, any place: the chance is ripe for the picking Changing the point of view is what it takes sometimes.
5.
Take a wander around What will you find? Find yourself in a city In a shifting of space and time You don’t know where to go On a mission that you only know Take a wander around, what will you find? It’s all there underneath the grind Where do you want to be? A voice says “come with me” Follow it around It feels like a dream The tension’s alive When you’re standing in two streams But when it’s time to go, you’ve got to Sometimes you feel the clock tick close by When you’re inside dancing like a stranger Two times so different from one another You’ll only get out by the skin of your teeth You’re now days in this place Signal from home is a static noise The notes of your report Are of a completely different line You wandered miles around and what did you find? It’s all there underneath the grind Is this where you want to be? You’re in for the kiss It feels like a dream But no-one knows that You’re standing in two streams But when it’s time to go, you’ve got to Sometimes you feel the wormhole on standby But you’re inside dancing like a stranger Sometimes new emotions run high You’ll only get out by the skin of your teeth
6.
Dreams collapsing on themselves Static on the radio Like a fox stuck in a trap Stare yourself out a window Stars running out of fuel Voices stop making words Fools filling up the void Now there’s something to talk about The unease expands A black giant mass It’ll be the same tomorrow Give it a pass Don’t get yourself bent out of shape about it, that’s the truth There’s any number of ways to get around it, time to move When you’re thinking to yourself Of another universe A smog is heavy in the sky There’s a flash of sun in the eye Minding plans that never spark Angst on things that were never done Some empty souls on the TV show There’s something to keep you up at night The skin expands With each lame mishap This could keep going on like a ticker tape for a long while But there’s no time for that Don’t get yourself bent out of shape about it, that’s the truth There’s any number of ways to get around it, time to move
7.
On a road that goes so far Excitement feels like the rush of a speeding car Going faster and and faster like trash in the wind An interstellar speed, can’t pull back Giving life to something bizarre Breaking off the roof like a brute crowbar What was there has been replaced Looking like something from outer space Heads turn around All the windows are so clear Word gets around The sleight of the lips make such a loud sound Heads turn around Even if it’s not extreme And when open minds close down You will know where to go to champion the fire Heads turn around On allure or sometimes fear Trying not to fall down You will know where to go to take yourself higher On a road that goes so far Cuts through the doldrums like a scar Echoes in the subway, wheels on the ground Going to quick to hang around It’s a strange situation With a wild imagination It’s a strange situation When you’re feeling so out of place Heads turn around Caught in headlights like a deer It’s the last showdown The one with the most will take up a crown Heads turn around Even if it’s not to please And when minds close down You will know where to go to rest from the fire Heads turn around On the count of 1, 2, 3 Cold long stares Will show you where to go to take yourself higher Kite on the waves like an electrical flyer
8.
You want it, but you can’t have it It’s trapped inside that head of yours You know it when you’re worn out The work it takes to put yourself into this place Feeling like the cracks are going to break it fast Fasting doubting, forever analysing What pours out of that head of yours You’re dreaming, cold sweat shaking Wondering the day when it fades away Looking for a spark that’s brighter than the sun You want it, but you can’t have it Some things are too fantastic to explain Feeling like the cracks are going to break it fast Looking for a spark that’s brighter than the sun Chasing down the tails of a strange vision A presence felt, there’s hitches on your hunt Understanding that your work is never done

about

When Push Comes To Shove is the seventh studio album by Soft Riot, the stylised musical alter-ego of Glasgow-based Canadian artist JJD .

Resonating with references from all corners of the synthpop’s origins (DAF, Fad Gadget and John Foxx to name a few), Soft Riot’s latest release nonetheless manages to retain its own individual voice, melding and reinterpreting its antecedents with a personal twist and an impressive demonstration of synth-craft and programming. Following on from 2018’s The Outsider in the Mirrors, these ten tracks represent a change in themes and an evolution in production and sound.

The forthcoming single and album opener "Taking The Edge Off" sets out the Soft Riot manifesto, a propulsive future-synth tale of forging ever-forwards in an increasingly noisy world. "It's No Laughing Matter" is a hedonistic yet propulsive dance-floor slammer — shades of minimal synth and metallic Belgian new beat condense in side one closer "Fate’s Got A Bone To Pick With You" and the dizzying italo-matic muscle workout "Don’t Get Yourself Bent Out Of Shape" is the ultimate self-help smack down.

Although there’s no overarching concept to the album, Soft Riot has used this release as platform to experiment with his own concept of “déja vu”, using minute details of musical phrases and lyrics that have been used before in previously released Soft Riot material, and even between songs on this album. Some of these mirrored details are very subtle and would only be picked up by someone who has listened to all of the material up until now. It could also be the underlying black humour of Soft Riot’s work, mischievously playing off the old saying “it’s all been done before”.

The tracks were all composed in an extended hiatus from live performance between November 2018 and January 2019; a deliberate move on the part of JJD in order to foster a more focused creative atmosphere and allow for the writing process to have a more intuitive flow. This also allowed for a deeper exploration of sound design of his equipment, with this release utilising a range of different synths, something that reflects in the depth and richness of the new album's sounds.

This revision in JJD’s approach also impacts on the thematics of his writing. As JJD says himself "I feel real life over this decade has gotten a bit stranger than fiction” — speculative preoccupations of isolation and paranoia have taken on a more personal dimension in his lyrics. There’s tales of alien visitors who fall to the trappings and joys of humanity while on a mission (“By The Skin Of Your Teeth”) to topics less cosmic and more close to home, such as the uplifting emotions one feels within a gathering of friends with the third track, “The Lost Weekend”.

The outcome has been a sideways step into more new wave pop aesthetics, and a looser sound (underpinned by the warmth of the production). This overall makes the album groove into a more dance-floor orientated full sound, thawing some of the cold-wave angularity The Outsider In The Mirrors.
